This is a community space which hosts many disciplines in the arts. They show work in the gallery that would have a large appeal to the community at large. In that, the work is very craft conscious, with photography representing the largest conceptual element. The types of work ranges from regional to international at all levels including novice.

The Irving Arts Center, a 64 000+ sq ft. performing and visual arts complex, is non-collecting institution with an active and ongoing visual arts program. One of the primary goals of the arts center’s visual arts programming is to provide an engaging and exciting venue for exhibiting the work of both the established and emerging artists in Texas. In addition to local and Texas –based artists, artists of both national and international renown are featured as well as touring exhibitions.

One of the cooler little tidbits I discovered about this place was that is was funded through a portion of a tax put on local hotel rooms. It’s a large city owned non-profit to both bring art to the community and to give tourists a sampling of said art. Okay, because it has this back ground, its mandate is most probably to bring understandable art to as many people as possible. So the art here although not bad is definitely not cutting edge. Its art chosen by board members. A good example of a show here was THE EMBROIDERERS' GUILD OF AMERICA'S 18th NATIONAL EXHIBITION. Which had some very cool embroidery indeed and was the kind of show that could be appreciated by many kinds of people regardless of their arts exposure.

This is a place that I have worked with directly. The staff there was incredibly gracious and very enthusiastic. And very creative about financing my show. When I showed there they were very interested in bringing more avant-garde contemporary art to their community. This was a place that showed a lot of water-colors, but they really took a chance with my installation show, and wanted something new for their community so badly that after I turned them down because of the lack of funds to make the show happen, they found a way to find those funds and get me out there to install. I was treated extremely well, and the staff was incredibly helpful in both helping me set up this really big installation, and take it down and pack it. It all arrived safely and well packed. This was an A++ experience. I have heard that they may no longer be trying such avant-garde shows. But the same people, who enthusiastically invited me out, are also engaged in another gallery in Laredo called Sound, which just brought out a very good friend of mine. So see Sound Space, also.

This is your typical non-profit community run center, board of directors who really like flowers, and lots of craft. If your work has universal appeal and it's craft or process oriented and not conceptually driven, here is one for you.
