Mission
The mission of ArtRod is to facilitate art exhibition in nontraditional public arenas. We have grown out of and in response to a specific need to bring contemporary art forms out of a solid conventional museum setting and directly into the community’s path.
Critical Line is an 1800 square foot exhibition space located at 741 Helens in Tacoma. The space will feature rotating exhibitions of emerging and established artists from around the world.

TollBooth Gallery
The TollBooth Gallery is the World’s smallest gallery dedicated exclusively to experimental video ad wheat paste Paper Fine Arts. The Tollbooth was once a TV-Tacoma information kiosk that had long since been abandoned and abused. During the summer and Fall of 2003, ArtRod was granted access to this kiosk and given authority by the city of Tacoma to use this former eyesore to program artworks for the public.

Toby Room Magazine
Toby room is a quarterly arts publication featuring the work by emerging and established artists who are doing engaging work in their field.

Editors Description:

I have to say that thier Tollbooth gallery is ridiculously cool. It’s a strange looking thing sitting right out on the sidewalk, with a video screen glowing day and night with the video art selection of the moment. The Façade/Structure/Whatever ya want to call it on the tollbooth is covered with wallpaper art... or as they would say “Wheat Paste” based art. It’s all kinds of awesome. So talk about public art that doesn’t suck or isn’t watered down, these people have it down. Any one on the street can’t help but see this glowing wallpapered video glory and interact with it in some way.

Their Published Description:

Richard Hugo House is a non-profit community center for the literary arts. Our mission is to identify and support practicing writers doing essential work, and to promote current critical dialogue in language and the arts.

Editors Description
Obviously they are going to give preference to artists who explore themes found in writing or whose work has got text in it, or who have partnered up with a writer.  Are you making a series of portraits of Virginia Woolf? ….. then you may want to give this place serious consideration. They don’t take any commission if you happen to sell anything and they have a mandate to show artists who are not yet established or who do not have representation in a gallery

Their Published Description:
Founded in 1995, SOIL is a not-for-profit cooperative space established, supported and operated by local artists. SOIL exists as an alternative venue for artists to exhibit, develop, and advance their work, and is committed to exhibiting and celebrating art of diverse media and content. The cooperative has been in existence for eleven years and has been consistent in showing a different exhibition each month that opens on every first Thursday. It has received substantial local as well as national press attention.

Editors Description
Soil is an artist run co-operative. That basically means that you are juried onto the board by your peers and help keep the space a float, through a membership which has a price tag that helps cover the cost of running such an adventure, and ensures you with a space to show your work. It’s a highly competitive process and most who apply don’t get the privilege.  Now, all of these artist run co-operative spaces (there is one in Philly called Vox Populi) are usually very respectable and show challenging work of both their own members and invited artists who the board juries in.  This space is located in, what the Grunge music scene made famous, Pioneer Square. This is a vibrant community of music cafes and now art.  To show here you have to convince the membership committee i.e.-the local artists who have been juried in full time to run the space, that you rock. These members are pretty good themselves and very dedicated to their space so don’t disappoint them with a shabby or unchallenging contemporary proposal of your work, or curated show idea.
( for example……these people had a great show with live gerbils)
