IF you ask me what my inspiration for creating BadGalleries.ORG was, I would tell you this story. I was peacefully going about the business of being me, you know making things, chilling with the peeps, the usual. When suddenly I got an unsolicited e-mail, form the director of this space, asking me if I wanted to have a show at their space, as they had seen my work in another University in PA and loved it. Well what artist wouldn’t want to have a show? So I said yes. Well several e-mails followed including one where I had given them a price range for the several shows that they could choose from. I knew that they were a University Space and as such might not be able to afford all of what I do. Well it was agreed upon that they would take the least expensive show I could offer them, a drawing show, which I could spend my next residency developing and rounding out. Okay, so several more e-mails, "send us a packet", "we are looking at Nov" "don’t worry all is swell"…etc…. October rolls around, and I make several phone calls and e-mails to them because I need the exact date in Nov, so I can crate the work and get it on the transport truck…..well no one gets back to me for a week. Finally, I get an e-mail and they say were sorry but we didn’t schedule your show in the final schedule. WTF!!! Couldn’t you have told me? You pursed me; you asked for a drawing show, you said the packet was just a formality. Well……I had spent $500 on real frames and my summer making work that now had no where to go. I wanted to scream from the mountaintop and tell everyone I knew not to show with these people. I sent out e-mails to my whole list over 50 artists in all, and then realized it was not enough, If they were treating me like shit they would do it to someone else. The next thing I know, more than half the people I e-mailed came back to me and said, oh my god I have a similar story........and hence BadGalleries.Org was born.
So everyone who likes this site, thank this crappy little school, for pisssing me off. I have since learned that student workers run this gallery, and that’s probably the cause for the lack of professionalism. IF you ask a professional to work with you, you should be a professional.
