Their Published Description:
ABC Rio was founded by visual artists committed to political and social engagement and we retain these values to the present. We are known internationally as a venue for oppositional culture.
We prefer collaborative efforts and group shows based on theme, and we embrace work with strong social and political content. Our goal is to present, interesting, vital and exciting exhibitions and to provide a forum for artists who may not be heard elsewhere, that have rejected by the mainstream art-world. We hope artists will want to show their work in the spirit of sharing rather than self-promotion.
ABC No Rio, operates on the principle of DIY or do it yourself. We believe that artists must take the responsibility for making things happen at the grass roots level in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support, and without seeking the validation of the dominant culture. DIY is a means to stand against the control exercised by huge institutions and business interests. We hope to nurture a scene created by and for artists in which the praise that matters is the praise awarded by one’s peers.
Editors Description:
This is a gallery that runs off of volunteers and grants. They don’t sell anything, and everything in their mandate promotes community and art for and about artists. To keep its overhead low they are a multi-use facility, which means that sometimes they have to move the work in or out. Also to keep their costs low you have to hang and dismantle the work yourself. If you are in NY or have a lot of friends there you will not have a problem, however it is limiting to artists who are not NY based. If they really like the project thought they may work with you. This goes the same for financial help in shipping and putting the shows together. They are a limit non-profit, so they don’t have a lot of cash. If you are looking to put a little moral responsibility into your practice though, this would be a fantastic place to work with. You would be having a show for your peers, and I believe that is beyond admirable.

Subcategory: Photography/Magazine
Their Published Description:
Aperture—the premier not-for-profit arts institution dedicated to advancing fine photography—was founded in 1952 by six profoundly gifted individuals possessed of lofty ideals and high ambition: photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall. With scant resources, these prescient artists created a new periodical, Aperture magazine, to serve the medium, and photography users and fine art lovers worldwide.
For more than fifty years, Aperture magazine has been unrivalled in its excellence and critical acclaim. And, as photography and the medium grew, so too did the Aperture Foundation, expanding to include the subsequent publication of books, limited edition prints and portfolios, traveling exhibitions, and an educational program that includes lectures and panel discussions with artists, curators, and other key players in the field of photography.
With profound respect for the integrity of the viewer’s experience and the artist’s vision, Aperture presents to the public the finest photographic images that are faithful to the artist’s intent and to the truth of the subject. These images are conveyed as intended by the artist, uncompromised by commercial motive, marketplace trends, or external censorship.
In March 2005, Aperture moved into its new headquarters in Chelsea’s art district, at 547 West 27th Street, 4th floor, New York, N.Y. 10001. Our new, 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art gallery opened September 8, 2005.
Editors Description:
If you haven’t picked up a copy of Aperture Magazine, and you’re a photographer, you really have had your head in the darkroom way to long. So you all know these people and what they are about. It seems that they just got new digs and started a gallery to show off good photography even more. Last year 357 photographers from around the work applied their work for review to this space. So good luck. The nice thing is, because they are a magazine first the gallery is financially supported without sales of the work, or grants. So they are in a unique position, and take work purely on its merit, not for any educational mandate, or because it will sell. They are in a great position to define what photography can be.

Nearly twenty-five years later, Art in General maintains its place as an important resource for emerging artists, presenting exhibitions of new work in all media.
Starting in the fall of 2005, Art in General will focus on commissioning challenging new work that may not otherwise be publicly realized.
With an inner-city arts education program, artist residencies, other exhibition opportunities and a full calendar of public programs, the organization has become a magnet and a resource for those interested in new ways of thinking about contemporary art.
Since Art in General’s foundation in 1981, over 4,000 artists have exhibited their work in a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, audio, video, performance, and new media. Audiences for public programs now number 25,000 annually and through various publications, collaborations with other institutions and a website, Art in General extends its programs beyond the exhibition space.

Editors Description:
Word on the street is that this is the kind of gallery that can help launch a career. Most artist who show here have done one of the prestigious and very hard to get residencies programs in and around Manhattan, like the Lower East Side Cultural. They stay pretty true to their mandate of showing the emerging artist, but this is not for the just anyone emerging artists. They show the elite and my one critisism is they are a little heavy on the elite of the NY scene. But they have kick ass shows, and if you become someone chances are you stopped here. They are so respected that the someones often come back to show here. This is a fantastic gallery, with fantastic exposure, a fantastic mandate and there is no evil that I can see. You will show here if you are on fire

Gas, develops catalogues for its shows that are actually affordable. 15$ is the average price for a catalogue that they have produced. Because they are also so multi-disciplinary they sell Vinyl. My favorite thing in their store was the political fun bumper stickers with slogans like “ I support the troops more than you”. This is an intelligent commercial gallery with a conscious. Most of what they sell is not overpriced and for 8$ you too can make fun of Bush. The art they show is extremely multidisciplinary and its really good work, from all over the country and international lands.

The Jeffrey Coploff Fine Art Gallery reviews portfolios and slides of abstract paintings and works on paper. We do not show representational work. Although there are some exceptions, most of our artists live in the tri-state area.
Editors Description:
To their credit they will not take on a new artists until they have met them in person and have seen their paintings live. This is a good thing especially considering that paintings can look so different in person than they do in print. Also someone can make something interesting and not ever be able to understand why or where it should go from there, and be like one of those bands form the 80’s who sang that great song but can never remember the name of the band. So it seems that they are interested in having artists around with a little longevity.
The paintings on their site where not super interesting but, then I am not seeing them live so ……see above.

formal portfolio viewing
These guys stay pretty close to what they say visually. They sell narrative/figurative painting with a twist. This is not painting your grandmother (if she is anything like mine) would like, or try to understand. A “fresh” approach to the old tricks of representation. They are interested in “young” ideas and artists. You can define young however you want. In grad school my 49-year-old teacher and Mentor was called in a article in the New York Times, a young next generation artist. Only in this field. To define fresh, I think they mean you have to have a shower, no dusty painting please. This gallery shows at the Fairs, Pulse, Scope London, the Hamptons…..etc... So that should tell you a lot about the kind of gallery it is. Commercial.

Editors Description:
NADA consistently is the best fair at Basel; it unusually has the best work, and the ideas that haven’t been watered down to the point of slick saleable nothingness. This is a gallery within the realm of NADA, so they follow to that standard. In that the work on their site is pretty solid, they have a lot of painting and it’s not the ‘OH MY GAWD why didn’t I do that painting”, but its solid work. They show the emerging respectable artist. I cannot comment on the low-key setting they talk about however, but it would be nice if that where true.
