Editors Description:
This is a gallery mostly of one guy’s work, with a few friends thrown in for good measure. And …. Folks this guy has a painting show on PBS. So without me even saying anything you know that he is a realist. Pope portrait glicees, portraits of the local anchorwomen and all of that. Unless you studied with Bob Ross, and are extremely good at those happy trees and frosty mountains, there is no need to apply to this gallery.

Their Published Description:

Founded in 1977, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) is a vibrant research and development center for the art of today and tomorrow. Through interdisciplinary presentation, education, community studios, and art therapy, we actively challenge both artists and audiences to new levels of creative activity, collaboration, dialogue and healing. UICA presents dynamic programming in the visual arts, music, film, literature, dance and performance art that, because of its content or technique, might not otherwise find a venue in West Michigan. UICA’s unique curatorial committee structure nurtures professional, diverse, community-based participation and ensures that all programs are artistically excellent, thought provoking and innovative. Last season, more than 300 contemporary artists from across the country showed and performed at UICA, 500 people worked in our studios, and 30,000 visitors were encouraged to new levels of insight and connectedness. UICA received high honors for both programming and leadership including, “best thing to do” (Grand Rapids Magazine), “best place to view art” and “best alternative film program” (On The Town), and our director was twice recognized as a “top community and business leader” (Grand Rapids Magazine and Grand Rapids Business Journal).

Editors Comments:

I have had a good friend who is an art professor in Grand Rapids who showed here and she loves this place. She loves the shows and she loved having a show here. Now really isn’t that what its about. They treat artist’s with great respect and are extremely respected themselves. Who knew that such a fantastic Contemporary Art Center could be in such an off the beaten path place. This is a contemporary art center in the best use of that term. The work here is very interested with concept and pushing boundaries. There is no Sunday painting within miles of the place. The work here rocks and rivals an art center in the heart of NY. They also organize really fun events for the local artists, including Critorama, which invites artists from around the nation to get together and to critique the local students art in one mass “critorama”
