Rating –Excellent
Level –Intermediate/Advanced
Type – Contemporary
Subcategory: Non-Profit
Their Published Description:
Established in 1995 through funding from the Margaret Hall Silva Foundation, Grand Arts is a not-for-profit contemporary art project space and studio located in Kansas City.
Grand Arts provides financial, technical, and logistical support to artists while encouraging conceptual risk-taking and experimentation at all stages of the creative process.
Few institutions within the United States can match the unique support we provide to local, national, and international artists. Our program began with a core group of energetic individuals with a wide variety of experience in the arts, and we take pride in our ability to tailor our program to meet the specific needs and goals of each artist. While participating artists are welcome to reside at Grand Arts during the duration of their project, this is not a requirement, and therefore Grand Arts is not a residency program.
Editors Description:
If you want to take a risk, try something new, go outside of your comfort zone and gamble big this is the space for you, because that is what they actively encourage. This is not a residency program but it has many of the perks of one, like a technical staff on site to help you realize your ideas. How cool is that. Take advantage of this, but get your sleep before you go, because they show work that is on fire, so don’t go and embarrass yourself, make sure your ready.

They ask you to e-mail them before you apply, because they don’t want your slides and CD’s to get stuck under pizza boxes in the committee’s storage room, which is considerate. They also made a comment that they only want professionals, so this is not for beginners, or vanity artists. However, that is all I know.

This is a commercial gallery located right by the Kempler Museum of Art and the Kansas Art Institute. They show craft oriented work which does not have strong conceptual motivation. This should not be confused with the Haller Gallery in New York, as they are not affiliated.
