The Art Academy’s main gallery, also known as the Pearlman Gallery, is made possible by Dr. Ruthe G. Pearlman, an Art Academy alumna who graduated in the class of 1930. A prolific artist, Pearlman is also a wonderful teacher who continues to share her talents with countless students through the Art Academy’s Community Education Program. Completed in 2005, the Pearlman Gallery hosts a wide range of exhibitions which support the educational mission of the college, as well as further its commitment to community outreach and involvement.
Each year the Pearlman Gallery invites artists and curators to submit call for proposals for its upcoming season

I had a fantastic time installing my show here, and I was sick while doing it. The director here is so cool. She took me and purchased the medicine I needed, when I got sick, she made sure I had places to go and people to drink with on Saturday night, and even drove me to get my car fixed (as I drove the show there on my roof rack) Lets face it the art is the biggest reason why we all have shows, the exchange of ideas, and well just not being the crazy person who plays with mud in the closet, but my favorite consequence of giving a lecture or installing a show on site, is the new community that you get to meet. The people here all Rock! I encourage all of you to do a site-specific installation here just to meet them. Outside of that, the space is amazing (although still a little dusty form the renovations of the building that they just moved into), they show good work, the director knows what she is doing and is incredibly dedicated and sensitive to art, and the support staff and teachers know how to show you a good time. Plus they have a fabulous apartment to put the visiting artist up in. while you are there. Also they paid me back for fees and expenses faster than anyone else I have ever worked with. So give them you’re best game and see if you get in. Highly recommended. A++

I stumbled onto this space while I was putting up my show at the Art Academy. I saw a flyer in the staff lounge, picked it up and applied. I had no idea who they where, but had no solo shows on the horizon so thought I would give my had a whirl at the group curated show. Like most of these shows, and one of the reasons I never apply to them they had an entry fee. Well you know how I feel about making artists pay fees (usually not cool as we can’t buy food or heat half the time) and I have a motto if you have to pay to be there, you don’t belong and fees to me fall into that scam. So unless it’s a program like Skowhegan, or Bemis I would never do it. However theirs was the smallest fee, I had ever seen. Ten dollars. I thought that seemed so much more reasonable and unscam like than the usual 35$ fee. Taking that as a good sign I applied. Well I was not disappointed. At the time of this writing I have been in two group-curated shows there, and was treated with the up most in respect both times. The first show, I had a few personal issues about why a particular part of my identity was so important for them to publish…(as its so minor and misleading in my own idea of who I am and how I want to be represented) and the Director, patiently explained to me his position, and tolerate my defense, even though I still didn’t agree. The second show the frame on my piece broke, and needed replaced ASAP. The director once again, patiently went out and got a new frame and had it installed by the time the show opened.

Its also in my nature as I have so many things on the go, and a very busy creative and social life not to read the fine print on things, which is why I need an assistant (Anyone…anyone….) Each time I have screwed up, they where pretty easy going about it, it was always mentioned but never obsessed over, which I do like when working with spaces. This is a patient gallery that really tries to get it. They put together fantastic shows, have great ideas and produce small but valuable catalogues to the emerging artist. I really hope that these guys get a grant so that they can take some of the shipping burden and other minor expenses off of the artist they work with. But they are new; my only criticism is that its more costly for me to send one piece to this gallery than it is for me to have a solo installation in a huge funded space. So I highly encourage this gallery to get some non-profit backing like the Kaplan Family Foundation, or the Andy Warhol Foundation. I think they have the potential and the quality to get it, and hope for the good of all that they do. Plus they have a great socially responsible mission and mandate. Watch out for this ones kids and get in on the ground floor, even if it costs 10$. A++
