Catherine Edelman Gallery opened in 1987 quickly establishing itself as one of the leading galleries in the Midwest devoted exclusively to the art of photography. From its inception, the goal of the gallery was to exhibit prominent contemporary photographers alongside new and young talent, showcasing a broad range of subject matter and photographic techniques.

Editors Description:
Well this is the gallery to go to if you want a Joel-Peter Witkin and who doesn’t. They actually had a great range of kinds of photography. There is not a dealer’s one esthetic at work here, which is kind of refreshing, especially since that grey all white sparse thing has been so popular at the fairs lately. Its like happy people can’t be intelligent, Intelligent artwork, can’t have color and stuff clutering it up..... its getting annoying. Anyway that is not happening here.  Plus they show photographers of all levels, so some of the work is stronger than others, but when you have a photo player like Joel-Peter to pay the bills you can take chances, and they do.

Now normally I do not encourage you to apply to places with an application fee, unless it’s a residency, or kicks ass and your work has a Teflon rear that’s also on fire. Well this is all that.  It has a residency program that support the creation and exhibition of your project and is a wonderful place that supports the creation of what ever it is you want to do. This is a very competitive program and what you have to do must be worthy or you haven’t a chance. In that your project should indeed take on some moral or social responsibility. So make sure you have something to say, or don’t think about applying here.
They tend to champion excellent visual artists with a political undercurrent in their work. Or as they say “current cultural issues and the creative practice that frame and respond to them. They have some big backing like the Kaplan Family Foundation.

Editors Description:

I don’t know much about the actually gallery, but I do know about the city. Chicago has a bit of a complex between NY and LA but still is home to one of the best painting programs in North America. It has a vibrant art scene, and there is probably some healthy competition to get a painting show in any of the galleries there. They have a site and the gallery shows intelligent thinking, that’s not yet stale. They also have a healthy lectures program. Evidence of a catalog program also displays that they have a healthy budget and will put your show in print. This though also means that this is not a gallery for beginners or artists who don’t have there stuff together.

Editors Description:

Unlike most commercial galleries, this gallery creates curated shows, which often tour to other parts of the country. In that it’s not all about the quick sale for these guys, but also the ideas relevant in the work and the sub context and intellect that can juxtapose ideas together. The work they show is top of the line, and kick ass. They have been specializing in this kind of art since 1986, and they know their stuff and share their knowledge and expertise on the matter with others. Not too shabby for a commercial gallery.
