Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (the Contemporary) has been a defining force in Atlanta’s cultural life since 1973; having been formed initially as Nexus Contemporary Art Center. What began as an artists’-run cooperative has evolved into an organizational model for contemporary art centers throughout the nation. The Contemporary is a multidisciplinary arts center that contributes to Atlanta’s arts scene by exposing the work of local, regional, national, and international artists to the Greater Atlanta community. Through our programming areas and educational outreach, the Contemporary strives to provide a service that is unique in Atlanta and the Southeast.

Editors Description:
Well they have a few big backers like the Andy Warhol Foundation and they have been around since 1973. They are a powerful venue for those artists whose luck has brought them into the Southern arts scene. Atlanta is an oasis in the middle of a lot of art nothing, and this place is one that provides some much needed refreshment.  They also have an artists residency program, which is not free but provides artists with a reduced rent on their studio.

If you are a visual artists and you use music or sound or experimental performance than this is the space for you. They don’t show boring crap, or pseudo unique slightly refreshing bullshit, they have very interesting experiments in sight and sound. They also have a video night to promote local video artist, a free lecture series, a monthly improvisation night and they create catalogues, which take the material and try and make it accessible and educational to the public. To top it all off and why they get an excellent rating, they try and find the funding to make your idea come to life.

Rating –Good
Level – Intermediate
Type – Contemporary
Subcategory:  Commercial/ Conceptual

Their Published Description:
Saltworks Gallery is a commercial venue dedicated to innovative, contemporary art. Founder and Director, Brian Holcombe transformed a 12,000 square foot piano warehouse into a flexible platform for conceptual and installation work. The gallery design serves to compliment the relationship between art and audience. Saltworks Gallery opened its doors January 2002 in the Fourth Ward district of Atlanta, GA.

Editors Description
They were in Scope Miami.  If there is a theme in what they show it seems to be in conceptual ideas of human functionality and behaviors. This is a conceptual contemporary art gallery. I am not sure how exactly they combine being a flexible platform for concept and installation, with being a fair going galley, as the two don’t always happily co-exist so I am interested in hearing comments from artist who work with them to see how they make it work.
